Linearity of the Climate Response to Increasingly Strong Tropical Volcanic Eruptions in a Large Ensemble Framework

Abstract Large explosive volcanic eruptions cause short-term climatic impacts on both regional and global scales. Their impact on tropical climate variability, in particular El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), is still uncertain, as is their combined and separate effect on tropical and global precipitation. Here, we investigate the relationship between large-scale temperature and precipitation and tropical volcanic eruption strength, using 100-member MPI-ESM ensembles for idealized equatorial symmetric Northern Hemisphere summer eruptions of different sulfur emission strengths. Our results show that for idealized tropical eruptions, global and hemispheric mean near-surface temperature and precipitation anomalies are negative and linearly scalable for sulfur emissions between 10 and 40 Tg S. We identify 20 Tg S emission as a threshold where the global ensemble-mean near-surface temperature and precipitation signals exceed the range of internal variability, even though some ensemble members emerge from variability for lower eruption strengths. Seasonal and ensemble mean patterns of near-surface temperature and precipitation anomalies are highly correlated across eruption strengths, in particular for larger emission strengths in the tropics, and strongly modulated by ENSO. There is a tendency to shift toward a warm ENSO phase for the first postvolcanic year as the emission strength increases. Volcanic cooling emerges on a hemisphere-wide scale, while the precipitation response is more localized, and emergence is mainly confined to the tropics and subtropics. Significance Statement The purpose of this study is to investigate at which strength the climate responses of volcanic forcing can be distinguished from the internal climate variability and whether the responses will linearly increase as the emission strengths become stronger. We ran 100-member MPI-ESM ensembles of idealized equatorial volcanic eruptions of different sulfur emission strengths and find that seasonal and ensemble mean patterns of near-surface temperature and precipitation anomalies are distinguishable and linearly scalable for sulfur emissions from 10 to 40 Tg S if their forcing patterns are similar. The identification of volcanic fingerprints is important for seasonal to decadal forecasts in the case of potential future eruptions and could help to prepare society for the regional climatic consequences of such an event.

A nonlinear full-field conceptual model for ENSO diversity

Abstract As the strongest year-to-year fluctuation of the global climate system, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) exhibits spatial-temporal diversity, which challenges the classical ENSO theories that mainly focus on the canonical eastern Pacific (EP) type. Besides, the complicated interplay between the interannual anomaly fields and the decadally varying mean state is another difficulty in current ENSO theory. To better account for these issues, the nonlinear two-region recharge paradigm model is extended to a three-region full-field conceptual model to capture the physics in the western Pacific (WP), central Pacific (CP) and EP regions. The results show that the extended conceptual model displays a rich dynamical behavior as parameters setting the efficiencies of upwelling and zonal advection are varied. The model can not only generate El Niño bursting behavior, but also simulate the statistical asymmetries between the two types of El Niño and the warm and cold phases of ENSO. Finally, since both the anomaly fields and mean states are simulated by the model, it provides a simple tool to investigate their interactions. The strengthening of the upwelling efficiency, which can be seen as an analogy to a cooling thermocline associated with the oceanic tunnel to the mid-latitudes, will increase the zonal gradient of the mean state temperature between the WP and EP, i.e., resembling a negative Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) pattern along the equatorial Pacific. The influence of the zonal advection efficiency is quite the opposite, i.e., its strengthening will reduce the zonal gradient of the mean state temperature along the equatorial Pacific.

Asymmetric Influences of ENSO Phases on the Predictability of North Pacific Sea Surface Temperature

AbstractThe North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) has a profound climatic influence. The El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) significantly impacts the North Pacific SST; however, the influence of the distinct phases of ENSO on SST predictability remains unclear. To overcome the model limitations, this study assessed SST predictability under diverse ENSO phases using reanalysis. The predictability limit of the North Pacific SST under La Niña (8.4 months) is longer than that under Neutral (5.9 months) and El Niño (5.5 months) conditions, which unveils asymmetry. This asymmetry mirrors contemporary multimodal prediction skills. Error growth dynamics reveal La Niña's robust signal strength with a slow error growth rate, in contrast to El Niño's weaker signal and faster error growth. There exhibits intermediate signal strength and elevated error growth in Neutral condition. Physically, predictability signal strength aligns with SST variability, whereas the error growth rate correlates with atmospheric‐ocean heating anomalies. La Niña, which induces positive heating anomalies, minimizes the impact of atmospheric noise, resulting in lower error growth. The result is beneficial for improving North Pacific SST predictions.

Interannual Lightning Variability within the TRMM LIS Dataset Using an ENSO Perspective

Abstract The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) was used to investigate interannual variability of lightning from 1998 to 2014 within the 38°S–38°N range. Previous studies have indicated that the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon is one significant contributor to interannual lightning variability, potentially the dominant mechanism on the global scale. This period of 16 years contained four warm- (El Niño), eight cold- (La Niña), and four neutral-phase ENSO years based on the oceanic Niño index. Large magnitude lightning anomalies were found during the warm phase of ENSO, with mean warm-phase anomalies of >10 flashes (1000 km)−2 min−1 in north-central Africa and Argentina. This includes a +35 flashes (1000 km)−2 min−1 anomaly in Argentina during the 2009 El Niño. In general, large-scale anomalies of thermodynamic properties and upper-atmospheric vertical motion coincided with the lightning anomalies observed in both Africa and South America. The anomaly over north-central Africa, however, was characterized by a 6-week shift in the annual lightning maximum with the warm phase, a result of the more complex environmental response to ENSO over the Sahel. The most consistent ENSO anomalies with appreciable lightning were found in southeastern Africa, northwestern Brazil, central Mexico, and the southern Red Sea. Of these, all but the Mexico region had enhanced lightning with the cold phase and suppressed lightning with the warm phase.

Observed interannual variability and projected scenarios of drought in the Chorotega region, Costa Rica

The observation-based analysis of drought development in the Chorotega region showed that, despite the area being relatively small, agricultural drought exhibits high spatial variability across the region. However, the lack of net radiation data hinders the capacity to provide reliable estimates of evapotranspiration (ET), affecting the assessment of drought occurrence, since its propagation across the hydrological system is very sensitive to the ET estimation method. The coarse resolution of satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) products and the lack of information on irrigation in agricultural areas limits the ability to properly establish a relationship between drought and vegetation response. Based on the observations, the most prominent precipitation deficits occur between September and October (–100 mm on average), showing that changes in the large-scale circulation are responsible for the impact of severe drought in the region. In agreement with previous studies, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the main modulator of the drought severity, with the warm ENSO phase favoring an enhanced drought development and its influence being more significant between August and October, displaying correlations greater than –0.6. The climate change projections under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios suggest the intensification of drought events in the Chorotega region at mid-century, with the Tempisque-Bebedero basin being the most affected area in terms of precipitation decrease and warming. The projected scenarios correspond to an increase of 1 oC for mean temperature and more of 2 oC for minimum and maximum temperature in the 2050 horizon, as well as a decrease of 400 to 800 mm for annual precipitation under both RCPs.

Quantifying the Relative Contributions of the Global Oceans to ENSO Predictability With Deep Learning

AbstractWe propose a unified statistical method based on deep learning and analysis to quantify the relative contributions of the global oceans to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) predictability. By incorporating subsurface signals in the Indian Ocean and Atlantic, the forecast lead can be skillfully extended by about one season. This skill enhancement mainly originates from the tropical Indian Ocean, presumably related to signals of the Indian Ocean Dipole passing to the tropical Pacific through the Indonesian Throughflow. The sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) in the Indian Ocean accounts for nearly 50% of surface contributions to both El Niño and La Niña predictions at a 15‐month lead. The north tropical Atlantic SSTA has a moderate impact on La Niña at a 9‐month lead. The Pacific Meridional Mode plays a significant role in both ENSO phases at a 12‐month lead. Thus, our study suggests that trans‐basin effects for ENSO are more vigorous than previously thought.

Variability of Fine‐Scale Chlorophyll Fronts in the Tīkapa Moana Te Moananui ā Toi Hauraki Gulf, Aotearoa New Zealand

AbstractAotearoa New Zealand's marine environment is heavily impacted by El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Little is known about the effect of ENSO on oceanographic properties in the area or their consequences on the distribution of marine organisms. Here we characterize the spatio‐temporal variability of fine‐scale fronts (<10 km) in the area of the Tīkapa Moana Te Moananui ā Toi Hauraki Gulf (HG) and investigate how it is impacted by dominant wind direction, seasonality, and ENSO phase. We processed satellite Ocean‐Land Color Instrument images from 2016 to 2022 with a fit‐for‐purpose version of the Belkin and O'Reilly frontal detection algorithm. We find coherent shifts in the position of fine‐scale features depending on the ENSO phase, with El Niño isolating the gulf sub‐regions and La Niña connecting them together. Overall, fronts tend to co‐locate with the 70 and 40 m isobaths in the outer and inner HG respectively, and their locations shift close or away from shore in response to changes in dominant wind direction. Furthermore, offshore frontal occurrences increase during winter and spring, and nearshore ones increase during summer and autumn. Our results sketch a first assessment of the distribution of fine‐scale features in a biologically important yet understudied region.

Space-time analysis of the relationship between landslides occurrence, rainfall variability and ENSO in the Tropical Andean Mountain region in Colombia

AbstractAccording to studies by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), tropical mountainous areas are experiencing increasingly unfavorable climatic conditions regarding geohazards due to a heightened occurrence of intense rainfall events. These climatic shifts contribute to heightened geological risks, notably an elevated frequency of landslides, exacerbating the challenges faced by these regions. There is an urgent need to understand and measure how rainfall variability affects geo-hydrological hazards, which remain difficult to determine and predict. The complex and non-linear space-time relationships and dynamics of rainfall, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and landslides in the Tropical Andean Mountain region in Colombia require an adequate analysis and understanding of their link in terms of its spatial and temporal component at different scales. By evaluation in annual, seasonal, and monthly scales, additional insights on the relationships using a wavelet spectral analysis and a space-time permutation scan statistics method using SaTScan™ are provided. In this study, a space-time and frequency analysis of landslides using a 42-year (1981–2022) rainfall and Multivariate ENSO Index v2.0 time series is presented. According to the results, landslides closely aligned with rainfall patterns, exhibiting a bimodal annual cycle. The ENSO added complexity, with La Niña years leading to more frequent landslides throughout the year and El Niño years showing concentrated occurrences in specific months. This study highlights the influence of rainfall patterns and antecedent rainfall on landslide occurrence, the impact of ENSO phases on rainfall and landslides, and the increasing trend of landslides in Colombia.

Contributions of initial conditions and meteorological forecast to subseasonal-to-seasonal hydrological forecast skill in Western Tropical South America.

Abstract Hydrological predictions at sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) timescales can support improved decision-making in climate-dependent sectors like agriculture and hydropower. Here, we present an S2S hydrological forecasting system (S2S-HFS) for western tropical South America (WTSA). The system uses the global NASA Goddard Earth Observing System S2S meteorological forecast system (GEOS-S2S) in combination with the Generalized Analog Regression Downscaling algorithm and the NASA Land Information System (LIS). In this implementation study, we evaluate system performance for three-month hydrological forecasts for the austral autumn season (March–April–May) using ensemble hindcasts for 2002-2017. Results indicate that the S2S-HFS generally offers skill in predictions of monthly precipitation up to one month lead, evapotranspiration up to 2 months lead, and soil moisture content up to three months lead. Ecoregions with better hindcast performance are located either in the coastal lowlands or in the Amazon lowland forest. We perform dedicated analysis to understand how two important teleconnections affecting the region are represented in the S2S-HFS: the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Antarctic Oscillation (AAO). We find that forecast skill for all variables at one month lead is enhanced during the positive phase of ENSO and the negative phase of AAO. Overall, this study indicates that there is meaningful skill in the S2S-HFS for many ecoregions in WTSA, particularly for long memory variables such as soil moisture. The skill of the precipitation forecast, however, decays rapidly after forecast initialization, a phenomenon that is consistent with S2S meteorological forecasts over much of the world.

Ability of a dynamical climate sensitive disease model to reproduce historical Rift Valley Fever outbreaks over Africa

Rift Valley Fever (RVF) is a zoonosis transmitted by Aedes and Culex mosquitoes, and is considered a priority pathogen by the WHO. RVF epidemics mostly occur in Africa and can decimate livestock herds, causing significant economic losses and posing health risks for humans. RVF transmission is associated with the occurrence of El Niño events that cause floods in eastern Africa and favour the emergence of mosquitoes in wetlands. Different risk models have been developed to forecast RVF transmission risk but very few studies have validated models at pan-African scale. This study aims to validate the skill of the Liverpool Rift Valley Fever model (LRVF) in reproducing RVF epidemics over Africa and to explore the relationship between simulated climatic suitability for RVF transmission and large-scale climate modes of variability such as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Dipole Mode Index (DMI). Our results show that the LRVF model correctly simulates RVF transmission hotspots and reproduces large epidemics that affected African countries. LRVF was able to correctly reproduce major RVF epidemics in Somalia, Kenya, Zambia and to a lesser extent for Mauritania and Senegal. The positive phases of ENSO and DMI are associated with an increased risk of RVF over the Horn of Africa, with important time lags. Following research activities should focus on the development of predictive modelling systems at different time scales.

ENSO phase locking, asymmetry and predictability in the INMCM Earth system model

Abstract Advanced numerical climate models are known to exhibit biases in simulating some features of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is a key mode of interannual climate variability. In this study we analyze how two fundamental features of observed ENSO – asymmetry between hot and cold states and phase-locking to the annual cycle – are reflected in two different versions of the INMCM Earth system model (state-of-the-art Earth system model participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project). We identify the above ENSO features using the conventional empirical orthogonal functions (EOF) analysis, which is applied to both observed and simulated upper ocean heat content (OHC) data in the tropical Pacific. We obtain that the observed tropical Pacific OHC variability is described well by two leading EOF-modes, which roughly reflect the fundamental recharge-discharge mechanism of ENSO. These modes exhibit strong seasonal cycles associated with ENSO phase locking while the revealed nonlinear dependencies between amplitudes of these cycles reflect ENSO asymmetry.We also assess and compare the predictability of observed and simulated ENSO based on linear inverse modelling. We find that the improved INMCM6 model has significant benefits in simulating described features of observed ENSO as compared with the previous INMCM5 model. The improvements of the INMCM6 model providing such benefits are discussed. We argue that proper cloud parameterization scheme is crucial for accurate simulation of ENSO dynamics with numerical climate models.

Distribution of the N2 -fixing cyanobacterium Candidatus Atelocyanobacterium thalassa in the Mexican Pacific upwelling system under two contrasting El Niño Southern Oscillation conditions.

The unicellular cyanobacterium Candidatus Atelocyanobacterium thalassa (UCYN-A) is a key diazotroph in the global ocean owing to its high N2 fixation rates and wide distribution in marine environments. Nevertheless, little is known about UCYN-A in oxygen-deficient zones (ODZs), which may be optimal environments for marine diazotrophy. Therefore, the distribution and diversity of UCYN-A were studied in two consecutive years under contrasting phases (La Niña vs. El Niño) of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) along a transect in the ODZ of the Mexican Pacific upwelling system. Of the three UCYN-A sublineages found, UCYN-A1 and UCYN-A3 were barely detected, whereas UCYN-A2 was dominant in all the stations and showed a wide distribution in both ENSO phases. The presence of UCYN-A was associated with well-oxygenated waters, but it was also found for the first time under suboxic conditions (<20 μM) at the bottom of a shallow coastal station, within the oxygen-poor and nutrient-rich Subsurface Subtropical water mass. This study contributes to the understanding of UCYN-A distribution under different oceanographic conditions associated with ENSO phases in upwelling systems, especially because of the current climate change and increasing deoxygenation in many areas of the world's oceans.

ENSO Impacts on Jamaican Rainfall Patterns: Insights from CHIRPS High-Resolution Data for Disaster Risk Management

This study examines the influence of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on Jamaica’s rainfall patterns, leveraging CHIRPS data from 1981 to 2021 in 370 locations. Our analysis reveals a distinct ENSO imprint on rainfall, with La Niña phases showing a consistently higher probability of exceeding various rainfall thresholds compared to El Niño. Notably, La Niña increases the likelihood of heavier rainfall, particularly in the wet seasons, with probabilities of exceeding 200 mm reaching up to 50% during wet season II. Spatially, the probability of total monthly rainfall (TMR) during La Niña is elevated in the northeastern regions, suggesting regional vulnerability to excess rainfall. Additionally, during El Niño, the correlation between TMR and the maximum air temperature (Tmax) is significantly stronger, indicating a positive and more pronounced relationship between higher temperatures and rainfall, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.39 to 0.80. Wind speed and evapotranspiration show a negligible influence on TMR during both ENSO phases, maintaining stable correlation patterns with only slight variations. The results of this study underscore the necessity for differentiated regional strategies in water resource management and disaster preparedness, tailored to the unique climatic characteristics imposed by ENSO variability. These insights contribute to a refined understanding of climate impacts, essential for enhancing resilience and adaptive capacity in Jamaica and other small island developing states.

A distinct and reproducible teleconnection pattern over North America during extreme El Niño events

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections are an important predictability source for extratropical seasonal climate forecasts. Previous studies suggest that the ENSO teleconnection pattern depends on the ENSO phase (El Niño vs. La Niña) and/or Sea Surface Temperature (SST) pattern (central Pacific vs. eastern Pacific El Niño events). Observations and ensemble simulations with the CNRM-CM6.1 atmospheric general circulation model indicate that only extreme El Niño events (e.g. 1982–1983, 1997–1998, 2015–2016) display a statistically significant eastward shift relative to the well-known Pacific-North American teleconnection pattern that occurs during both central and eastern Pacific moderate El Niño or during La Niña. This specific teleconnection pattern emerges when equatorial SST anomalies are both eastward-shifted and sufficiently large to exceed the deep atmospheric convection threshold over most of the eastern Pacific, resulting in a basin-wide reorganization of tropospheric heat sources. It yields> 0.5 std wet conditions over Western United States (74% likelihood) as well as> 0.5 std warm anomalies over Canada and the Northern United States (71% likelihood), with more consistency across events and ensemble members than for any other El Niño or La Niña type. These findings hold important implications for the seasonal forecasting of El Niño’s impacts on the North American climate.

Spatial and temporal variations in the micronutrient Fe across the Peruvian shelf from 1984 to 2017

High dissolved iron (dFe) concentrations of the order of 10–100 nmol L−1 are a feature of waters influenced by sedimentary inputs in oxygen minimum zones (OMZ). However, the temporal development of dFe concentrations is poorly defined due to a general reliance on snapshot cross-shelf sections to study marine trace metal dynamics. Multiple cruise campaigns since the 1980s have investigated Fe dynamics over the Peruvian shelf, particularly between 9° S and 17°S where the shelf is broad, extremely productive and known to feature benthic dFe effluxes which are amongst the highest measured globally. This extensive long-term dataset uniquely allows us to study the interannual variability in dFe concentrations and their response to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. By combining data from 11 cruises during the period 1984–2017 we are able to evaluate dFe dynamics on interannual timescales in a major OMZ. The region where average dFe concentrations are sensitive to variations in ENSO is confined to a subsurface layer at depths between 50 and 150 m, particularly in the narrow coastal region within 50 km of the coastline. Subsurface dFe concentrations were generally low during El Niño events (0.7–15.4 nmol L−1) and relatively high with a wider range of variability during the cold ENSO phase (1.1–52.1 nmol L−1). Inverse relationships between wind speed and surface/subsurface dFe were evident. In the subsurface layer, this may be attributable to enhanced dFe offshore transport along isopycnals when upwelling-favorable winds relax in accordance with previously outlined theories. Surface layer (<40 m) dFe variability was likely associated with a dilution and/or oxidation effect depending on the strength of wind driven water column mixing. Upwelling brings macronutrient-rich water into the euphotic zone, but its intensity had a limited impact on upper layer dFe concentrations possibly due to the influence of an onshore geostrophic flow. Interannual variability in surface chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) was found to correlate with dFe concentration in the offshore zone of northern Peru. This is consistent with bioassay experiments and climatological residual nitrate concentrations which both indicate proximal Fe limitation of phytoplankton growth over and beyond the northern Peruvian shelf. Overall, our work highlights the importance of physical factors driving short-term variations in Fe availability in one of the world’s most economically important fishery regions and suggests that, despite pronounced spatial and temporal variability in dFe concentrations, the ENSO phase has an impact on dFe availability.

Nonlinearity and Asymmetry of the ENSO Stratospheric Pathway to North Atlantic and Europe, Revisited

AbstractNonlinearities and asymmetries of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) stratospheric pathway to the North Atlantic and Europe are examined in large ensembles conducted with fully coupled climate models during wintertime. The analysis is centered on historical experiments of the Max Planck Institute Grand Ensemble (MPI‐GE, 95 members) and expanded to six other ensembles of more limited size. In MPI‐GE, significant responses are obtained for each ENSO phase and three different intensities (weak, moderate and strong). Overall, linear relationships are found for either El Niño or La Niña key diagnostics that characterize the pathway. These relationships are generally weaker for the cold La Niña than for the warm El Niño so that asymmetries between them develop as the events intensify. Specifically for strong events, the extra‐tropical North Pacific and stratospheric responses are asymmetric, with larger responses for El Niño. In addition, the stratospheric asymmetry in strong events seems to contribute to the asymmetry in strong events in the North Atlantic—Europe response in the troposphere in late winter. The extra‐tropical North Pacific response shows general agreement between MPI‐GE and the other large ensembles. However, this agreement is not as large when other parts of the pathway are compared. Relatively high inter‐model response spread confirms the typical model uncertainty found when examining atmospheric circulation responses which include the stratosphere in state‐of‐the‐art climate models.

Water vapour exchange between the atmospheric boundary layer and free troposphere over eastern China: seasonal characteristics and the El Niño–Southern Oscillation anomaly

Abstract. This study develops a quantitative climatology of water vapour exchange between the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and free troposphere (FT) over eastern China. The exchange flux is estimated for January, April, July and October over 7 years based on a water vapour budget equation using simulated meteorological data. The spatiotemporal characteristics and occurrence mechanism of ABL–FT water vapour exchange and its relationship with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are revealed: (1) the vertical exchange flux varies regionally and seasonally, with downward transport to maintain ABL moisture during winter and autumn in the northern region and persistent output to humidify the FT in the southern region, particularly in summer. Additionally, the vertical exchange flux is also topographic dependent. (2) The vertical motion at the ABL top, which is produced by the dynamic forcing of the terrain on synoptic winds, is the dominant mechanism for the water vapour vertical exchange over the long-term average. The evolution of the vertical exchange flux within 1 d scale is driven by the ABL diurnal cycle. (3) The interannual variation of water vapour vertical exchange is correlated with ENSO. A triple antiphase distribution with negative–positive–negative anomalies from north to south exists in La Niña years (and vice versa in El Niño years), which corresponds to the spatial pattern of anomalous precipitation. This phenomenon is mainly due to the alteration of vertical velocity and water vapour content at the ABL top varying with ENSO phases. These results provide new insight into understanding the atmospheric water cycle.

Abstract We diagnose physical factors related to frequent compound drought and heat extremes over a Middle East and Southwest Asia (MESA; 30°–40°N, 35°–65°E) region in a recent (1999–2022) compared to a prior (1951–98) period. The recent compound extremes were related to conflict, disease transmission, and water shortages in this already semiarid region. Observed estimates and four transient climate model ensembles are used to identify the effect of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and atmospheric forcing by greenhouse gases and aerosols on these compound extremes in autumn (September–November), winter (December–February), spring (March–May), and summer (June–August) that may lead to practical forecast skill for future compound events. Observations and climate models indicate that MESA compound drought and heat in the autumn, winter, and spring wet seasons for the recent period were related to the La Niña phase of ENSO and an attendant northward shift of the storm track that hinders precipitation-bearing storms from moving through MESA. A comparison of different conditions in the model simulations is used to isolate the effects of La Niña and the atmospheric forcing by greenhouse gases and aerosols on compound MESA drought and heat. A comparison of recent and prior periods in the climate models, which isolates the effects of the atmospheric forcing, indicates that greenhouse gases and aerosols are related to the increases in MESA heat frequency in all seasons. A comparison of La Niña to ENSO neutral and El Niño in the recent period of the climate models indicates that La Niña is related to increases in MESA drought frequency in the wet seasons. Significance Statement Compound drought and heat pose serious threats to the Middle East and Southwest Asia (MESA) where political and socioeconomic challenges leave its people vulnerable to climate extremes. In this region, frequent seasonal compound drought and heat in a recent (1999–2022) compared to a prior (1951–98) period were related to conflict and water shortages. Physical factors related to these compound extremes in the recent period over MESA were identified, potentially rendering future occurrences predictable. La Niña and atmospheric forcing by greenhouse gases and aerosols contributed to the compound extremes, with the former related to anomalously low precipitation in the September–November, December–February, and March–May wet seasons and the latter related to anomalous high temperatures in all seasons, including June–August.

Spatial Patterns of Vegetation Activity Related to ENSO in Northern South America

AbstractInterannual variability of vegetation activity (i.e., photosynthesis) is strongly correlated with El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Globally, a reduction in carbon uptake by terrestrial ecosystems has been observed during the ENSO warm phase (El Niño) and the opposite during the cold phase (La Niña). However, this global perspective obscures the heterogeneous impacts of ENSO at regional scales. Particularly, ENSO has contrasting impacts on climate in northern South America (NSA) depending on the ENSO phase and geographical location, which in turn affect the activity of vegetation. Furthermore, changes of vegetation activity during multiple ENSO events are not well understood yet. In this study, we investigated the spatial and temporal differences in vegetation activity associated with ENSO variability and its three phases (El Niño, La Niña, Neutral) to identify hotspots of ENSO impacts in NSA, a region dominated by rainforest and savannas. To achieve this, we investigated time series of vegetation variables from 2001 to 2014 at moderate spatial resolution (0.0083°). Data were aggregated through dimensionality reduction analysis (i.e., Global Principal Component Analysis). The leading principal component served as a proxy of vegetation activity (VAC). We calculated the cross‐correlation between VAC and the multivariate ENSO index separately for each ENSO phase. Our results show that El Niño phase has a stronger impact on vegetation activity both in intensity and duration than La Niña phase. Moreover, seasonally dry ecoregions were more susceptible to El Niño impacts on vegetation activity. Understanding these differences is key for regional adaptation and differentiated management of ecosystems.
